Apple Reportedly Plans February Launch for Gemini-Enhanced Siri Assistant

After months of speculation, the first sign of Apple and Google’s partnership may soon arrive: a major Siri update built on Gemini AI, reportedly slated for a February announcement.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is planning to roll out a new version of Siri in the second half of February, powered by Google’s Gemini AI. The update is expected to be the first to fulfill the capabilities Apple outlined last June 2024.

Gurman says the early Gemini-powered Siri will be capable of completing tasks using a user’s personal data and on-screen content, pushing the assistant well past its current limitations.

The February announcement is expected to serve as a preview of a more significant Siri update planned for June at WWDC. Gurman says the later version should be more conversational, similar to chatbots like ChatGPT, and may rely on Google’s cloud infrastructure.

For much of last year, Apple’s AI story was defined by delays and doubt. Previous reporting, including Gurman’s, described internal struggles to advance the company’s AI initiatives. Gurman says Apple executive Mike Rockwell later pushed back, telling foundation team members over the summer that one of those reports was “bulls***.”

The subsequent Google partnership announcement and the recent departure of Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, indicate a more defined path forward for Apple’s assistant and AI strategy.

If the reported schedule proves accurate, the upcoming announcements will offer the first tangible glimpse of how Apple and Google’s partnership is set to reach consumers.
