Bluesky is preparing to test a new “dislike” feature that aims to refine personalization across the platform. Not like a standard downvote, the button functions as a preference signal, teaching the system which types of content users prefer to avoid. This data will influence content rankings within the Discover feed and conversation threads alike.

This update ties into Bluesky’s bigger goal of keeping conversations fun and respectful. Instead of cracking down with heavy-handed bans, the platform wants to hand more control to users. You can already tailor your feed with custom moderation lists, filters, muted words, and even plug in outside moderation tools. There’s also a handy option to unlink quote posts, meant to tone down the dunking and pile-ons that plague other networks.

The team’s also playing around with new ways to make chats feel more natural. One big experiment is “social neighborhoods,” which basically groups together users who talk to each other often. Replies from people in your own circle will show up first, so conversations should flow better. It’s a smart fix for one of the biggest gripes about Threads, where random replies from strangers can make posts feel totally out of context.

Bluesky’s also making some smaller but smart changes to how people talk on the platform. Its new moderation model now pushes down spam, toxic replies, and random off-topic comments so they’re less visible. And if you tap “Reply,” you’ll be taken to the full thread first instead of jumping straight into typing. It’s a simple change, but the team thinks it might actually get people to read what’s already been said before posting.

Bluesky’s also making it easier to find and adjust reply settings, so people actually know they can choose who replies to their posts. It’s all part of a bigger push to make online conversations feel a bit more intentional, and a lot less chaotic.
