Elon Musk just launched Grokipedia, a digital encyclopedia made by his AI startup, xAI. What makes it different is that every article is written and updated by AI, not people. It’s clearly meant to take on Wikipedia, which Musk has often accused of having a political slant.
Grokipedia launched Monday with around 885,000 articles. The site’s minimalist design hides a new approach: every entry is generated by AI. Musk says the goal is to “purge out propaganda.” Early articles show clear differences from Wikipedia, especially on gender and political topics.
Grokipedia runs on the same AI that powers Grok, the chatbot built into X. Musk’s team says that’s a big advantage, since it means the encyclopedia can pull from real-time conversations happening on the platform and update its pages much faster than humans ever could.
We are building Grokipedia @xAI.

Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia.
Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe. https://t.co/xvSeWkpALy
But relying this heavily on automation comes with problems. Grok, the AI running the show, has made plenty of mistakes in the past, everything from repeating conspiracy theories to spitting out offensive or fake content. Musk says those bugs can be fixed, but it still raises real questions about whether the tech is ready for something that needs to be both precise and unbiased.
Early signs point to trouble. A quick look through Grokipedia reveals mistakes. One entry, for example, claims a timeline for Vivek Ramaswamy’s work with an organization that the cited news stories never mention. It’s a small detail, but it hints at a larger problem.
The experiment has already drawn skepticism from traditional encyclopedia circles. Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales questioned the project’s foundation, arguing that today’s AI models are not yet capable of producing consistently accurate, verifiable articles. Their tendency to generate false or unsupported information, he said, makes reliability a serious concern. As a result, Grokipedia’s credibility remains uncertain.
