Netflix is introducing a dedicated app for children aged eight and under, featuring curated games built around familiar characters and included at no extra cost for subscribers. Called Playground, the app is designed as a safer, more controlled environment that steers clear of ads and the unpredictable content often found on other platforms.
Netflix Playground is a newly announced all-in-one app designed to give children a curated gaming experience centered on familiar cartoon characters. The company says it will function as an expanding library of games that kids aged eight and under can jump into instantly.
Access is bundled into the standard Netflix subscription at no extra charge, an appealing inclusion for a gaming strategy that hasn’t fully entered the mainstream.

The app is available on iOS and Android devices, including phones and tablets. At launch, the catalog features games built around recognizable franchises like Dr. Seuss’s Horton!, Peppa Pig, Bad Dinosaurs, and Sesame Street, prioritizing accessible experiences such as music-making, casual sports, and low-pressure interactive environments.
Playground is clearly geared toward parents who usually have to dig through packed app stores to find something fun and safe. Instead, Netflix offers a smaller, curated selection and there are no extra in-app purchases to worry about.
The release comes at a time when social media and gaming services are enforcing stricter age policies. Meanwhile, companies like Meta have faced legal challenges over concerns about the impact of their platforms on children.
The company has also confirmed more content arriving later this year, including Gabby’s Dollhouse, KPop Demon Hunters, PJ Masks, My Little Pony, and Paw Patrol.
Playground feels like Netflix’s kid-friendly answer to Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription-based gaming service. Apple provides hundreds of ad-free games at no extra cost, while Netflix combines its gaming efforts with a large content library that few competitors can match.
Still, subscription ecosystems such as Netflix and Apple don’t necessarily offer the best games, even for younger players. Although they provide a more controlled environment than platforms like Steam or traditional consoles, Apple Arcade has received criticism from some developers, especially in the indie community, about its long-term prospects.
Netflix Playground has launched in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, the Philippines, and New Zealand. Netflix plans to expand availability worldwide on April 28.
