Apple is looking into several possible changes to the Apple Watch lineup, including a screenless wearable and a model with a round display. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also reports that Apple could refresh both its high-end and more affordable watches.
More than a decade after its introduction, the Apple Watch remains largely unchanged in its basic design and purpose. It still uses a rectangular display and combines health features with simplified versions of iPhone apps. The formula continues to sell well, with Gurman reporting a 21 percent increase in Apple Watch sales in the first quarter of this year.
At Apple’s September event, the company is expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4. According to Gurman, the new watches will focus mainly on performance improvements, although Apple could also make a few design changes. A ceramic case may return later this year or in 2027, while updates to health and fitness features, new colors, and additional wristband options are also being considered. The event is also expected to feature the iPhone 18 lineup, a new Apple TV box, an updated HomePod mini, and possibly Apple’s first smart home hub.
Apple’s push into AI could also change what the Apple Watch is capable of. The company is spending heavily on a more advanced version of Siri, while Eddy Cue has reportedly been encouraging Apple to move faster with AI. With that in mind, it would make sense for the Watch to pick up more AI features as Apple’s plans take shape.
The Apple Watch arriving next month probably won’t look all that different from the current models. But Apple may have bigger changes in mind for later, including a screenless wearable as the market starts moving in that direction.
