Samsung revealed its new “P” Series portable SSDs at Gamescom 2026 in Germany. The drives are being marketed as some of the fastest on the market, though the flagship model’s price may be too high for many consumers.
The series includes two models, the P9, designed for professional, high-volume use, and the P7, marketed by Samsung as a convenient everyday option. Looking at the suggested retail prices, though, that convenience doesn’t come cheap.
The P9 leads the lineup in terms of specs, offering sequential read speeds up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds up to 3,800MB/s, roughly double the previous generation’s performance. Samsung compared it directly to the 4TB T9, which reached 2,000MB/s over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.
The secret behind those speeds is USB4 connectivity. And it’s already got some hardware to back it up, the P9 picked up an Innovation Award at CES earlier this year, with Samsung pointing to its ability to handle real-time 12K recording. That’s the kind of feature meant for serious video and RAW editing work.
For those who value flexibility over raw speed, the P7 offers the same USB4 interface with wide compatibility. Samsung says it works across desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and even USB-compatible cameras. Durability was also a priority for this consumer-focused model, which passed a 2-meter drop test along with shock and vibration testing.
Samsung Electronics Vice President Tommy Kwon said the P Series was developed to offer real performance benefits for AI-powered content creation and video production.
Pricing, however, is where the P Series runs into trouble. The P9 spans four capacities 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB with prices from $340 up to $2,700 for the flagship 8TB model. The P7, billed as the budget-friendly option, starts at $290 for 1TB and tops out at $2,290 for 8TB.
Both models in the P Series are scheduled to begin shipping on August 31.
