HP Launches OmniBook 5 to Take on Apple's MacBook Neo

The 14-inch Windows machine starts at $699 and is set to hit Best Buy in October, as PC makers answer Apple’s MacBook Neo.

Apple released the MacBook Neo, a laptop priced below $600, about seven months ago. Since then, several PC manufacturers have introduced competing models. HP is the latest, with the OmniBook 5 14 AI PC.

HP calls the OmniBook 5 a premium consumer Windows laptop. The entry configuration pairs a 14-inch, 1,920 by 1,200 OLED touch panel (Gorilla Glass 3, 100 percent DCI-P3) with an Intel Core 5 320, 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, and integrated Intel graphics.

The OmniBook 5 comes standard with a 256GB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD, and larger drives are offered. Doubling the storage costs an extra $50. The laptop also has an NPU rated at 16 TOPS, which technically qualifies it as an AI PC, though neither HP nor Microsoft is promoting the feature much.

According to HP, battery life reaches up to 42 hours of local video playback. Fast charging takes the battery from empty to 50 percent in 30 minutes. Wireless support includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. The laptop has one HDMI 2.1 output, two USB Type-C ports, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. It also comes with a 1080p webcam, a dual-array microphone, and stereo speakers.

The laptop is available in pink, silver, blue, and green. It comes with a one-year limited hardware warranty. The 14-inch model weighs 2.6 pounds and measures 12.3 inches by 8.62 inches by 0.46 inches. It includes a full-size backlit keyboard and an HP ImagePad, and it ships with Windows 11 Home.

The HP OmniBook 5 14 AI PC is expected to be available before the holidays. The base model will be sold at retailers including Best Buy starting in October, with a starting price of $699.
