OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health

OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated digital health experience that integrates personal health data into its conversational AI platform. Framed as a companion rather than a clinician, the tool is meant to help users navigate their well-being with greater confidence, backed by firm privacy assurances.

The launch responds to existing demand. OpenAI says its de-identified data shows health and wellness are already among ChatGPT’s most common use cases, with more than 230 million people worldwide asking related questions each week.

“Health information lives in too many places, portals, apps, wearables, even PDFs, making it hard to see how it all fits together,” the company said. “ChatGPT Health is meant to pull that context into one place and reflect it in its responses.”

ChatGPT Health centers on securely connecting external health data. Users can link medical records and wellness apps, including Apple Health, Fitbit, and MyFitnessPal, so conversations are based on their specific information, and the AI can assist with tasks such as:

  • Explaining recent lab test results.
  • Preparing questions for an upcoming doctor’s appointment.
  • Offering dietary or exercise routine suggestions.
  • Analyzing healthcare patterns to understand insurance options.

OpenAI says the tool is designed to support, not replace, medical care. It does not provide diagnoses or treatment, focusing instead on everyday health questions, long-term trends, and helping users take a more active role in their care.

To address privacy concerns, ChatGPT Health adds multiple layers of protection. It operates as a separate, compartmentalized space within ChatGPT, with dedicated encryption and isolation for health conversations. OpenAI says these chats are not used to train its foundation models and will prompt users to move sensitive discussions into the Health interface for added protection.

Access will be limited at launch. OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Health to a small group of early users in regions outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The trial includes users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, with a waitlist available for broader access.

Medical record integrations and connections to certain apps are available only in the U.S., and linking Apple Health requires an iOS device. The company plans to expand access and roll out Health to all users on the web and iOS in the coming weeks.
