Meta Introduces Collections and Trials Collaborative Buying on Facebook Marketplace

In its latest update, Meta introduced several improvements to one of the most popular features among teenagers, especially in Canada and the United States: Facebook Marketplace. It is currently widely used for selling items, ranging from new to second-hand goods. The improvements focus on the platform’s most active categories: home décor, fashion, and vehicles.

The focus is shaped by strong user engagement. In the US and Canada, a quarter of young adults who use Facebook daily also visit Marketplace. To support them as they furnish a first apartment, shop for a car, or look for new clothing, the platform is introducing new features.

Collaborative Shopping with Collections

A new feature called ‘Collections’ lets users build curated groups of listings and share them with friends. After saving an item, users can create a collection and choose to keep it public or private. Friends can be added to browse, contribute, and discuss options, with updates easily shared through Feed, Messenger, or WhatsApp.

Facebook is also experimenting with a new ‘collaborative buying’ feature, which lets users bring a friend directly into their chat with a seller. The tool is designed to simply group tasks such as arranging pickups, negotiating prices, and asking questions.

A More Personalized Experience with Reactions and Comments

To strengthen community engagement and improve discovery, Facebook is now allowing users to react to and comment directly on Marketplace listings. These interactions provide social proof about an item’s quality and help surface unique products. They also enable the platform to better understand user preferences, resulting in a more personalized feed over time.

AI-Powered Shopping Assistance

Facebook is experimenting with an AI tool that steps in when buyers aren’t sure what to ask. With a tap on the ‘Suggested questions to ask’ button, Meta AI studies the listing and the ongoing chat, then offers prompts that make the conversation smoother, especially when the purchase is a complicated one.

This matters even more for car listings, which are one of the top things young adults search for on Marketplace. Facebook is also trying out a special AI tool for vehicles that pulls together key info like engine choices, safety ratings, transmission type, and price ranges into one simple summary.

Expanded Inventory through Partnerships

The platform is also expanding its inventory through partnerships. In response to growing demand for vintage fashion, Facebook has integrated listings from eBay and, more recently, Poshmark. This provides shoppers with a wider selection across categories like fashion and electronics.

These partner listings are clearly identified with an icon and are seamlessly integrated into the standard Marketplace feed. While the product details page remains on Marketplace, the final checkout process is completed on the partner site.

A Shipping Process

Facebook has improved the checkout process for shipped items. The system now shows the full cost, including taxes and shipping fees, before you place an order. Buyers will also get notifications as their package moves through each stage, making the experience clearer from start to finish.
