Spotify Will Soon Label Artists Who Are AI Personas

Spotify is introducing a new way for users to tell whether an artist profile belongs to a real musician or an AI-generated persona. Starting in mid-September, the company will begin adding “AI persona” labels to profiles that represent artificial identities rather than human artists.

Before the new labels arrive, Spotify is giving artists the option to tell the company if their profile represents an AI persona. But the platform won’t simply take their word for it. Spotify says it will also manually review profiles that appear to use photorealistic AI-generated identities.

The labels will include details explaining how Spotify identified the AI persona, either through a voluntary disclosure from the creator or through its own review. The company also plans to introduce a reporting option in the coming months for listeners who believe an artist profile is AI-generated.

Spotify says music from AI personas will generally be left out of its algorithmic and editorial recommendations unless a listener follows the account. As a result, these tracks will not appear in personalized playlists or discovery features for users who have not actively engaged with the artist.

The new badge is focused on an artist’s public identity, not on whether AI was involved in making their music. Spotify already has separate tools, such as AI credits, that show when artificial intelligence played a role in producing a track. The AI persona label will sit alongside the Verified badge introduced earlier this year, which is designed to identify music from real human artists.

Spotify expects the AI persona badges to become visible to users beginning in mid-September.
