Spreadsheets have long been a routine part of work and education, but they are not always the easiest way to make data accessible or engaging. Turning that data into an interactive dashboard has typically required some technical knowledge. Google is looking to simplify the process with a new Sheets feature called Canvas, which uses a Gemini prompt to transform spreadsheet data into interactive mini-apps.
Google says Sheets Canvas works as an interactive layer over your existing data. It remains connected to the underlying spreadsheet, while Gemini can make changes based on additional prompts. Users can get started by clicking the Gemini button in Sheets and describing what they want to create.
Google gives a few examples of how the feature could be useful. Students could turn assignments and deadlines into an interactive board to track their progress, set reminders, and plan for the week ahead. Another example involves turning a wedding RSVP list into a seating chart that can be updated as arrangements change.
Google has been adding Gemini features to its workplace and productivity apps for some time. In Sheets, Gemini can already handle quick, multi-step edits through simple prompts, helping users avoid spending too much time working out complicated formulas. Sheets canvas takes that idea further by turning traditional rows and columns into a more visual and interactive format.
Sheets canvas is now available in English to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. Google is also rolling it out to Workspace customers on Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus plans, along with subscribers to the Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
