Years of whispers, leaks, and speculation came to a close in Cupertino, where Apple finally lifted the curtain on its first folding phone, the iPhone Duo. New CEO John Ternus is calling it “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.”
The iPhone Duo features two Super Retina XDR ProMotion displays: a 7.6-inch foldable screen on the inside and a 5.4-inch screen on the outside. Both use Ceramic Shield 2 for protection and reach up to 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple plans to add USB-C Apple Pencil support to both displays through a future update.
The chip, manufactured by TSMC on its 2nm process, includes a custom vapor chamber designed to improve heat dissipation. Apple says this cooling system gives the A20 Pro an edge over rivals in multitasking, gaming, and heavy AI tasks, with sustained performance reportedly up 35% over the iPhone 17 Pro.
On the outside, the iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide main camera alongside a 12MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. The main sensor can shoot 4K at 120fps and capture 4K time-lapse footage in Dolby Vision HDR. Apple has also added a Center Stage camera up front and an under-screen FaceTime camera on the inner display for video calls.
The body’s made from Grade-5 titanium, so it’s sturdy without being heavy. The hinge cover is actually 3D-printed with a micro-blasted finish, which looks pretty striking next to the mirror-polished frame. Apple also threw in ceramic fiber inserts at the antenna splits to make the whole thing even more rigid.
Touch ID makes a comeback on the foldable, with a fingerprint scanner built into the power button. Face ID and Apple Watch unlocking are also supported. Connectivity runs through Apple’s own N1 chip, covering Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, while a separate C2 modem handles 5G mmWave.
The Duo runs iOS 27, with several software features tailored to its folding screen. Chief among them is Today View, which splits into two Home Screens, one featuring a scrollable list of customizable widgets. Apple has also reworked the Dynamic Island and added a circular status bar module displaying Wi-Fi, cellular signal, and battery info.
The iPhone Duo comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, with pricing starting at $1,999 for the 256GB base model. Pre-orders open October 16, ahead of general availability on October 23.
