Samsung Unveils Industry-Leading LPDDR5X DRAM at Blazing 10

Samsung’s recent announcement introduces their latest development: LPDDR5X chips, a DRAM technology engineered for top-tier performance, specifically optimized for AI applications. The new LPDDR5X chips demonstrate remarkable speed, reaching up to 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps), however, they are still in the developmental phase and not yet available for widespread use.

Low-power double data rate (LPDDR) is a standard for low-power SDRAM memory chips, ideal for mobile applications and devices with power constraints. These LPDDR chips, while consuming less energy than traditional DDR RAM, boast impressive capabilities, easily supporting the demands of cutting-edge AI applications.

Samsung has achieved a significant milestone in memory technology with its latest development. Utilizing its 12nm-class manufacturing process, the company has produced what it describes as the smallest chip size ever seen in LPDDR memories, paving the way for more compact yet powerful mobile DRAMs. These new chips, boasting capacities up to 32 gigabytes (GB) in a single package, are strategically engineered for on-device AI applications.

The advancements in these chips are impressive. Samsung reports that compared to previous generations of LPDDR, the new chips offer a performance boost of over 25 percent, coupled with a capacity increase exceeding 30 percent. These improvements signify a leap forward in mobile memory capabilities, promising faster and more efficient operations for devices utilizing these cutting-edge LPDDR memories.

Samsung’s latest LPDDR5X chips come equipped with specialized power-saving technologies, setting a new standard for energy efficiency in mobile DRAMs. Among these innovations is an optimized power variation feature that dynamically adjusts power feeding based on the current workload, alongside expanded low-power mode intervals to prolong energy-saving periods. These advancements collectively contribute to a remarkable 25 percent improvement in power efficiency, as reported by Samsung.

The impact of these enhancements extends across various sectors. In mobile devices like smartphones, the new LPDDR5X DRAMs promise longer battery life, a crucial benefit for users on the go. Additionally, for servers and data centers handling intensive processing tasks, the chips offer potential cost savings with reduced energy consumption. Samsung suggests that AI applications, whether on local portable devices or server-based infrastructures, can fully leverage the capabilities of this advanced technology, marking a significant step forward in memory efficiency and performance.

Samsung’s Vice President notes a rapid increase in demand for low-power, high-performance memory products, signaling a significant shift for LPDDR DRAM solutions. Originally focused on the mobile market, LPDDR is now expanding into sectors prioritizing enhanced performance and reliability.

To meet this growing demand, Samsung plans to offer its latest LPDDR5X DRAM chips to various industries, including PC and server manufacturers, AI accelerator developers, and automotive companies, positioning itself for the forthcoming era of on-device AI applications. The company is currently in the process of technology verification with mobile partners and providers, targeting mass production of the 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X chips in the second half of the year. This strategic move aligns with Samsung’s vision to lead in the development of cutting-edge memory solutions that cater to evolving market demands.
