Netflix will be the first place to watch the new Grand Theft Auto VI trailer, called “An Extended Look.” It premieres Thursday, August 27, and will be exclusive to Netflix for six hours before releasing on YouTube.
The trailer premieres on Netflix at 3 PM ET on August 27 for subscribers only. At 9 PM ET that same day, it will be posted to Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel, where anyone can watch it for free.
For Netflix, this is more than a trailer drop; it’s a marketing statement, which reportedly paid a large, undisclosed amount for temporary rights to the trailer. It shows just how much cultural influence the Grand Theft Auto franchise holds, standing out in the industry for the level of hype and money it generates.
This deal comes as Netflix has scaled back its gaming division. After acquiring several studios in 2021, including Night School Games, known for Oxenfree, the company reversed direction. Since Alain Tascan took over Netflix Games in 2024, nearly all of its internal studios have been closed or sold, leaving just one still active. Netflix still licenses and publishes games through outside partners, but the rapid breakdown of its AAA teams points to a shift away from its earlier gaming strategy.
The trailer’s release also lands during a rocky stretch for Rockstar, which has been scrambling to contain a wave of leaked gameplay footage in recent days. An official, polished trailer would likely help shift the conversation back to Rockstar’s own narrative, rather than the leaks.
After the exclusive window ends, the trailer is likely to spread quickly across social media through unofficial uploads, which could limit the long-term traffic benefits for Netflix and YouTube alike. Still, for six hours on a Thursday afternoon, Netflix will be the only official source for the newest look at one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history.
