WhatsApp has introduced several new features that improve how the app works across different devices. The updates are meant to give users a more seamless experience on tablets, in cars, and while handling documents on desktop.
In an announcement detailing the updates, WhatsApp described a shift in how people use the messaging service. Conversations are no longer tied to a single phone; they happen from the couch on an iPad, during the commute home, and across multiple apps throughout the day. The company said it has been working with partners to integrate WhatsApp more naturally with the other tools and screens people already use.
Sign Up Directly on iPad
One of WhatsApp’s most requested features has finally arrived. Users can now create and use a WhatsApp account directly on an iPad without linking it to a smartphone. Previously, the iPad app required a phone to complete setup.
Redesigned Experience for CarPlay and Android Auto
WhatsApp has updated its interface for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new version allows users to listen to and respond to messages, make calls, view recent calls, and quickly access favorite contacts through their vehicle’s display.
PDFs Open and Annotate Directly in Chat
WhatsApp is also improving document handling on its web and desktop apps. Users can now open PDF files without downloading them first, and Adobe Acrobat integration adds support for basic editing tools such as highlighting and annotations.
Share Songs to Status from Apple Music and Spotify
Users can now share music to WhatsApp Status directly from Apple Music and Spotify. The song appears within the Status update, making it easy for others to see what someone is listening to.
According to WhatsApp, all of these features are already rolling out to users globally.
