Google plans to invest $15 billion to build out data centers for what’s set to become its largest AI hub outside the U.S. The announcement came during a Tuesday event where Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian outlined the company’s plans for southern India’s Andhra Pradesh state.
The investment will be deployed over a five-year period to establish a 1-gigawatt facility in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam. Nara Lokesh, Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for Human Resources Development, initially valued the project at $10 billion on Monday, characterizing it as the result of extensive negotiations conducted over the past year. He noted that this project is just the first step in the state’s larger plan to expand its tech infrastructure.

According to reporting from India’s Economic Times, Google’s Indian subsidiary, Raiden Infotech, will execute the project by developing three separate campuses throughout Visakhapatnam. State officials have indicated their intention to pursue additional similar ventures, with plans to substantially increase Andhra Pradesh’s computing capacity within the next three years.
This major investment mirrors a wider trend of tech companies rushing to scale up their infrastructure to meet soaring demand for AI-powered cloud services. Google adjusted its 2025 capital expenditure forecast upward in July, increasing the figure from $75 billion to $85 billion specifically to address what the company described as robust and growing demand for its cloud offerings. That same month, Google revealed separate plans to invest $25 billion in data centers and AI infrastructure across the United States over a two-year period.
India has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for major technology companies seeking to expand their cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Microsoft and Amazon Web Services are among the other multinational corporations that have committed substantial resources to the Indian market, positioning the country as a critical hub in the global AI infrastructure landscape.
