With the MacBook Neo launching at $600, or $500 for students, Apple is taking aim at budget Windows laptops. Microsoft has responded with its own initiative, the “Microsoft College Offer.”
Microsoft’s bundle combines Microsoft 365 Premium, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, a custom Xbox controller, and a discounted laptop. The offering is designed to nudge students away from Apple’s rival package.
Students who buy a discounted device through Microsoft, participating retailers such as Amazon and Best Buy, or manufacturers like HP, ASUS, and Acer can unlock a bundle Microsoft values at an additional $500.
The laptop discounts are a key part of the promotion. Best Buy is pricing the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x (Snapdragon X, 16GB RAM, 256GB storage) at $499, a $250 reduction from its standard $750 MSRP. Meanwhile, Walmart lists the HP Omnibook 3 at $429, down $270 from $699. Microsoft’s own Surface Laptop range is included, albeit with less aggressive discounting.

The savings on a laptop are easy to understand. The value of the Microsoft College Offer is less straightforward when considering the bundled services. A one-year subscription to Microsoft 365 Premium normally costs $200, but many students may already receive access to these tools through their institutions.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, which costs $30 per month as of October 2025, may seem like a strong value. However, the promotion is limited to new subscribers. As a result, the complimentary custom Xbox controller, valued at around $76, stands out as the most straightforward benefit.
Windows PC manufacturers are likely to step up their efforts to challenge the Neo over the coming year. For now, the Microsoft College Offer isn’t a bad option, but it lacks the simple appeal of an Apple-caliber laptop priced at $500 with a student discount.
The Microsoft College Offer opens to students on April 15 and will run through June 30, 2026. According to Microsoft, all included services and accessories must be redeemed by July 31, 2026.
