YouTube Will Limit Shorts Reach for Low-Value Clipper Accounts

The platform says it will reduce distribution for re-uploaded clips, though key details remain unclear.

YouTube is rolling out changes to its Shorts recommendation system that downrank clipper accounts, meaning channels that re-upload footage from other creators with no original contribution. The platform says the update is meant to surface more original content and shrink the distribution of reposted videos.

The update could help viewers who want to see fresh content instead of repeated material. YouTube hasn’t said how the change will work, though that’s common among tech platforms, which usually keep the details of their algorithms private.

Prioritizing Original Content on Shorts

YouTube said channels that mostly collect existing content without making significant changes will likely get less distribution in the Shorts feed. This doesn’t mean all re-uploads will be restricted. The platform says uploaders should add real value, such as original commentary, unique edits, or storytelling, and suggests clipper accounts focus on developing their own voice.

It’s unclear whether the update will also affect creators who make Shorts from their own longer videos. If those clips are deprioritized, it could be a setback for creators who focus on long-form content and use Shorts to find new viewers.

The Shorts update is one of several recent changes on YouTube. The platform announced custom video feeds, now allows GIFs in comments, and is preparing an auto-dubbing tool that can translate content in real time.
