If you’ve ever found yourself mindlessly scrolling through social media at 2 a.m., wondering how you got there, a new device from Brooklyn-based consumer electronics company Light might offer an escape route.
The company has launched the Light Flip, a $299 flip phone that leaves out many of the features that encourage excessive screen use. While its clamshell design resembles classic Motorola Razr phones from the early 2000s, its goal is to promote more intentional phone use.
The Light Flip comes equipped with a 2.8-inch non-touch OLED display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 50MP rear camera, and a user-replaceable 1,800mAh battery. It also includes a traditional T9 keypad, bringing back the familiar typing experience found on classic phones from Nokia, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson.
Despite its simple design, the phone still packs modern essentials like 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It also comes in six colors and even has a spot for attaching a lanyard, giving it an old-school vibe.
Powered by LightOS, the phone focuses on essential features rather than a full smartphone experience. It supports calls, messaging, the camera, calendar, music playback, and alarms, while leaving out social media, internet browsing, streaming platforms, and shopping apps.
Alongside the hardware, Light is promoting its “Flip Your Life” digital detox program, which is designed to help users reduce their dependence on smartphones. The company says the Flip is primarily intended for people between 18 and 30 years old who want to step away from the constant demands of an always-connected lifestyle.
In an interview with ZDNet, Light co-founders Joe Hollier and Kaiwei Tang said the company’s internal research found that 52% of Millennials and Gen Z respondents would consider switching to a basic feature phone to reduce social media use and avoid endless doomscrolling. Light believes that growing concerns over digital burnout could drive renewed interest in simpler mobile devices.
Preorders for the Light Flip are now open with a $39 deposit, while shipments are scheduled to begin in April 2027. The unlocked phone will be sold for $299 through Light’s official website, and buyers can also choose a two-year service plan that costs $39 per month.
The company has not announced whether the Light Flip will be available through major carriers such as Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile, or if it will be offered with carrier contracts.
