X is shutting down its existing creator revenue-sharing program as it shifts toward a new model centered on original content. The platform has closed applications for the current program, which is scheduled to end after September 7. Its replacement, the Original Content Rewards Program, will focus on rewarding creators who contribute original ideas, reporting, expertise, creativity, and commentary to the platform.
Under the new program, creators can earn money based on qualified impressions generated by their original content. X says this includes their own writing and reporting, as well as photos, videos, memes, and illustrations they create. Content based on another person’s work can also qualify if the creator adds meaningful commentary, analysis, or creative editing. However, basic captions or text overlays that only describe the original content will not qualify. X says content that adds little or no value to someone else’s work will not be treated as original.
There are a few requirements creators need to meet before they can join the Original Content Rewards Program. They must be 18 or older, live in an eligible country, and have a paid Premium, Premium+, or Premium Business subscription. X also requires at least 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home timeline views from verified users over the past 90 days. Only unique views from Premium users count toward that total. Creators also have to keep meeting these requirements after joining if they want to continue receiving payouts.
Creators already enrolled in X’s current revenue-sharing program will not be moved over automatically. They will have to apply for the new program once they become eligible on September 8. Creators who were never part of the old program, meanwhile, can apply for Original Content Rewards now.
The new monetization system follows a revenue-sharing change X introduced in March. The updated formula gave more weight to engagement from a user’s home region, partly in response to reports of popular U.S.-focused accounts being operated from abroad. The change was widely seen as a way to discourage users from misrepresenting their locations. X has not said whether the new Original Content Rewards Program will use the same geographic weighting.
