Google is expanding its subsea network in the Americas with three new cable systems connecting Chile, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Bermuda and Florida.
The work is part of the company’s Americas Connect expansion. Google said the new cables, combined with a new Firmina branch and its existing Curie, Nuvem and Sol systems, will increase capacity and create additional routes for data traffic across the region.
One of the new cables, Alisios, will connect the Dominican Republic, Panama and Chile. It will link Panama and Chile across the Pacific, while another section will connect Panama with the Dominican Republic through the Caribbean.
On the Pacific side, Google says the network will form a ring between Chile and Panama. A separate connection will also run from Panama to the US West Coast, tying into Google Cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
In the Caribbean, Alisios will connect to another ring that runs from the Dominican Republic to the US East Coast. That route will connect to Google Cloud regions in South Carolina and Virginia
Google is also building a cable called Canoa between the Dominican Republic and Bermuda. Combined with Google’s existing Nuvem and Sol systems, Canoa is expected to create more direct connections between Latin America and the Caribbean, North America and Europe.
A third cable, OlaLuz, will connect the Dominican Republic with Florida. Google said the route will increase capacity between the Caribbean and the US East Coast while providing another path for data traffic in the region.
Google is also extending its Firmina subsea cable with a new branch that will land in the Dominican Republic. The cable was originally built to connect North and South America. This new route will extend the network into the Caribbean and provide the country with another connection.
The main goal of the new cables is to add capacity and provide Google with more backup routes. With more connections between its cloud regions across the Americas, the company will not have to rely as heavily on a single route.
Chile plays an important role in that plan. The country has been working to establish itself as a regional digital hub, helped by its fiber network, subsea cable connections and renewable energy resources. Google is also supporting the Humboldt cable, which will connect Chile with Australia across the Pacific.
