The next PlayStation and Xbox consoles are generally expected to launch in 2027, although a global memory shortage could make that timeline harder to meet. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki recently told The Wall Street Journal that the company has not yet decided when to release the PlayStation 6. The lack of a firm date comes as RAM prices continue to climb.
2027 remains a likely window for the next PlayStation and Xbox consoles. March reports suggested that Sony and Microsoft were targeting that year for the PS6 and the next Xbox, reportedly codenamed Helix. AMD says its Xbox chips will be ready for mass production in 2027, while Microsoft plans to release development kits next year.
Memory pricing is one of the biggest challenges facing PlayStation’s next generation. Demand from AI data centers has pushed RAM prices to around five times their 2025 levels. This has raised questions about whether new consoles can launch during the shortage without exceeding the $1,000 price point. The PS6 is reportedly already nearing that figure in component costs, and existing consoles have become much more expensive.
Simply waiting for the shortage to end may not work. Experts expect the memory crunch to stick around through 2027, but there’s no clear agreement on what comes next. Supply could start recovering in 2028, or the tight market could drag on well into the 2030s.
Even with the launch date still uncertain, reports suggest Sony and Microsoft have finalized the specifications for their upcoming consoles. Both are expected to use AMD’s Zen 6 CPU architecture, RDNA 5 graphics, and GDDR7 memory. Sony may also release a handheld built around the same architecture.
Sony and Microsoft have shared some details about the technology planned for the PS6 and Helix. Both consoles are expected to offer improvements in ray tracing and path tracing, as well as machine-learning-based upscaling for better image quality. Neural rendering could also improve micropolygon performance while helping reduce game file sizes through compression. Microsoft has confirmed that Helix will also support PC games.
