iPhone Duo Users Report Cracked Screens Shortly After Launch

Shortly after the iPhone Duo went on sale, users began sharing photos of cracked screens on social media. Many of the complaints concern the foldable display, and some posts describe damage in areas other than the fold.

The iPhone Duo subreddit is filling up with threads on cracked displays, complete with photos. Several owners say Apple is swapping out the $2,000 handset readily for now, but that leniency could change if production problems persist and replacement volumes climb.

In most of the photos, there’s a break right along the fold and a bright line of pixels shooting off toward the right edge. It ends up looking like a big white L cutting across the inner screen.

A user in Australia reported the problem six hours after buying the iPhone Duo, having opened it fewer than 20 times. He said he felt something along the hinge under the screen, then heard a crack as the display broke. There were no marks on the screen surface or the outer hinge to suggest anything had been caught.

According to the report, Apple’s phone support offered an express replacement but required a hold for the full price of the phone and couldn’t give an arrival date. The user went to an Apple Store instead, and staff replaced the phone immediately.

Another owner says a similar crack showed up before he’d even finished setting the phone up. Photos on Reddit, X, and the MacRumors forums show comparable damage in the US, Australia, and China, including what look like demo units in China, though how most of the screens got damaged isn’t clear.

One user has pointed to the tension springs that keep the iPhone Duo propped at different angles as the likely culprit. It’s too soon to know how many phones are affected, and reviewers who folded the device thousands of times say they never saw a crack.

Affected owners are getting quick replacements, which is lucky given what Apple charges for repairs. Without AppleCare+, fixes and replacements cost anywhere from $49 to $1,499.

Supply could become the next bottleneck. Apple is reportedly struggling with manufacturing issues and low yields, and demand has outstripped what it can build. Store pickups have worked for some buyers, but other orders are already backlogged into 2027.

Reviewers have mostly liked Apple’s first foldable, calling its hinge the best they’ve used on any foldable phone. Several also singled out the speakers. The main complaints are the missing Face ID and apps that haven’t been updated yet to make use of the big screen.
