OpenAI Introduces Codex Micro With Custom Controls for Codex AI Workflows

OpenAI Codex Micro

Rather than launching a standalone AI device, OpenAI has debuted the Codex Micro as its first hardware product. Created in partnership with Work Louder, the keypad is built to work with the company’s Codex coding tool and is now on sale for $230.

The release comes months before OpenAI is expected to unveil its rumored smart speaker, a separate project reportedly being developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive and slated for launch later this year.

The Codex Micro is based on the same design as Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 and the Framer Micro, which was developed with website builder Framer. It features six frosted LED keys that indicate the status of active Codex agents. Users can assign other keys to functions such as accepting or rejecting code, creating branches, or launching voice input. A rotary dial changes Codex’s reasoning mode, while a joystick provides quick navigation through workflows. The package also includes extra keycaps for custom layouts.

The launch comes soon after OpenAI consolidated its standalone Codex app into a unified platform that combines ChatGPT, Codex, and its new productivity-focused assistant, ChatGPT Work. The software doesn’t require dedicated hardware, but the Codex Micro is intended to streamline workflows for developers who use Codex extensively.

Compared with OpenAI’s other hardware plans, the Codex Micro has had a relatively quiet launch. The company’s rumored smart speaker is already facing legal trouble after Apple sued OpenAI employees Tang Yew Tan and Chang Liu, claiming they took trade secrets when they left Apple.

The Codex Micro is priced at $230 and can be purchased through both OpenAI’s and Work Louder’s online stores. Work Louder notes that availability is limited, indicating the initial production run could sell out quickly.
