Live with Search on Android Brings More Fluid, Expressive Interactions

The latest update to Search Live uses a new Gemini AI model to deliver fluid, human-like voice responses for hands-free help.

Many users have wanted a more conversational way to interact with Google Search, particularly when their hands are busy. Google is now addressing that with an update to Search Live, powered by a new Gemini model built specifically for native audio, promising smoother and more natural voice interactions.

The update, which started rolling out this week to all Search Live users in the United States, turns voice search from a basic question-and-answer tool into an ongoing conversation. In AI Mode, users can speak naturally with Search, receive real-time assistance, and have relevant websites surfaced, all without touching the screen.

The main improvement is in the spoken output. The new Gemini model produces more natural-sounding responses with flexible speech patterns, allowing for better inflection, pacing, and overall expressiveness.

“This update means that Search can respond with a more natural-sounding voice or at a certain speed – perfect for DIY help or learning more about a new topic, like geology,” the company explained in its announcement.

The use cases are straightforward. Users can follow spoken, step-by-step instructions for tasks like fixing a leaking faucet, with natural pauses between steps, or discuss complex topics such as astrophysics in a continuous, hands-free conversation.

How to Use It

Accessing the feature remains easy. For users in the U.S.:

  1. Open the Google app on Android or iOS.
  2. Tap the distinctive “Live” icon located under the search bar.
  3. Ask your question out loud to initiate a helpful audio response and continue the conversation naturally.

The technology is positioned as a practical tool for learning and completing tasks, particularly when screen use is inconvenient or impossible.

The updated Gemini model for native audio will be available to all U.S. Search Live users within the next week. “We hope you’ll try it out soon to enjoy smoother, more natural conversations,” Google stated, inviting users to experience the more expressive assistant firsthand.
