A 27-minute gameplay reveal for Grand Theft Auto VI has become a global phenomenon, breaking viewership records and driving an unprecedented surge in traffic to Netflix’s platform.
The exclusive “Extended Look” premiered at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, August 27. Within the first 72 hours, the video had accrued more than 31 million views globally, securing its position as the most-watched title in its category on Netflix for the week. Following a six-hour exclusivity window, the video was published to Rockstar’s official YouTube channel at 9 p.m. the same day, where it has since drawn more than 20 million additional views.
This marks Netflix’s early entry into gaming content, an area so unfamiliar to the platform that the title is currently listed as an “English-language film.” Even with that mismatch, the preview performed very well, reaching the top of the charts in 87 of the 93 countries Netflix monitors.
The high demand for the footage caused a temporary service disruption. According to data from Sensor Tower, mobile app usage for Netflix spiked by 50 percent compared to the previous 12 Thursdays, while overall traffic to the website increased by 125 percent. The influx of users briefly crashed the Netflix website immediately after the video went live; however, the platform recovered quickly, with the stream proceeding smoothly after the initial glitch.
The video offers the most detailed look yet at a title widely expected by industry insiders to rewrite global sales records. Before last week, Rockstar had released only two teasers for the game-one in December 2023 and another in May 2025-neither of which showcased the performances in as much depth as the latest footage.
Shot on the PlayStation 5, the extended look provides a deep dive into the game’s open-world mechanics and the Leonida setting. It showcases protagonists Jason and Lucia in both cinematic cutscenes and gameplay segments throughout Vice City, confirming that players can complete missions as either character, working together as a team or operating separately.
Grand Theft Auto VI is slated for release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. An unconfirmed PC version is likely to arrive a year or more later. The title is currently available for pre-order on the official Rockstar Store, the PlayStation Store, and the Xbox Store, with the Standard Edition starting at $80.
