Meta is carrying out another major workforce reduction, cutting 10 percent of its staff. The move is expected to affect around 8,000 employees, while roughly 6,000 vacant roles will also be removed, according to Bloomberg.
The latest cuts were announced in an internal memo from Meta‘s human resources chief Janelle Gale, who said the move was part of the company’s ongoing push to operate more efficiently while balancing other investments.
Those “other investments” are widely believed to be tied to artificial intelligence. Meta is developing its own AI models, reportedly using internal staff in the process, while its smart glasses continue to gain new AI-driven features.
The latest layoffs may not be the final step in Meta’s restructuring. A March report suggested the company was considering workforce reductions of up to 20 percent, with no timeline attached. Since then, Meta has eliminated hundreds of roles in Reality Labs and closed three VR studios as part of broader metaverse cutbacks.
