Android Auto Gets Full-Screen Maps, Gemini, and Video Streaming

Android Auto

Google has rolled out a major Android Auto update, its biggest since the 2023 “Coolwalk” redesign, featuring an adaptive Google Maps layout, home screen widgets, Gemini AI integration, HD video streaming, and Dolby Atmos support.

The update shifts Android Auto entirely to the Material 3 Expressive design, bringing updated typography, smoother animations, and colorful wallpapers. It expands on the earlier Coolwalk redesign, which introduced multitasking, a refreshed app dock, and enhanced safety features.

A redesigned home screen is a key part of the update, offering a more personalized layout with widgets for quick access to contacts, garage door controls, and weather information.

The update adds native Gemini integration to Android Auto, enabling users to check sports scores, weather updates, and traffic information through voice commands. Google has also partnered with DoorDash to add food ordering support. Gemini access is expected to roll out later this year for existing Gemini users.

The updated Google Maps interface now adapts to different infotainment screen shapes and sizes, including wide and circular displays. It also introduces 3D visuals for buildings and overpasses, while making navigation details like lane guidance, traffic lights, and stop signs easier to see.

Android Auto will also gain Full HD video streaming at 60fps for the first time. Playback is limited to parked vehicles, automatically switching to audio-only once the car starts moving. The feature is scheduled to launch later this year in models from BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo vehicles.

Support for Dolby Atmos will introduce spatial audio playback to compatible Android Auto apps. The feature will initially be available in select vehicles before expanding to additional models.

Vehicles running Google built-in will receive additional Gemini features, including tools that can identify possible causes of dashboard warning lights and estimate whether items will fit in the trunk. Gemini will also use the vehicle’s front-facing camera to analyze traffic and recommend lane changes when appropriate.
