Gaming is becoming more expensive and less accessible. Hardware costs have risen, and supply can be limited even for people who can pay. Once a player has suitable hardware, many new AAA games still require very large downloads before they can be installed and played.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch on November 19. Players are encouraged to check their hardware beforehand, with storage being the main concern. The new Rockstar game is expected to need a large amount of free space to download completely.
PlayStation Game Size has reported that the PS5 download for GTA VI is 210 GB, including assets, maps, and code. The account monitors the PlayStation Store’s backend to spot changes to upcoming releases. The installed size is likely to be below 210 GB, but players will still need substantial free SSD space, and download time will depend on their internet speed.
Whether GTA VI will need a day-one patch to run well on PlayStation and Xbox is still a mystery. One thing is certain, though: the disc is gone. Even the boxed copy holds nothing but a download code. And for the most devoted fans, Rockstar has set out a $400 collector’s box, one with no game inside, only plastic trinkets and keepsakes.
GTA VI’s open world and deep side content give it a better case than most for a heavy install. It still fuels the ballooning file sizes seen across AAA releases. And where Call of Duty lets players install modules separately, GTA VI will likely be an all-or-nothing download.
Grand Theft Auto VI could reach PC as early as the first or second quarter of 2027, according to rumors, but Rockstar hasn’t announced a date. PC players don’t need to start clearing out their SSDs yet.
