Reddit Splits its Main Feed Into ‘For You’ and ‘Following’

Reddit Splits its Main Feed Into 'For You' and 'Following'

Reddit is restructuring its home feed into two distinct views. “For You” pulls in algorithmically recommended content, and “Following” limits the feed to posts from subreddits the user has subscribed to.

Reddit’s main feed is changing to work more like the feeds on other large social platforms. Previously, there was one feed that combined recommended posts with posts from subreddits a user had joined. Reddit says the new “For You” section is designed to help users find communities and conversations they might not have come across otherwise.

Reddit’s app will launch into the new “For You” feed by default. From then on, it will remember the last feed a user viewed and reopen to that one.

Reddit probably expects the change to increase engagement. CEO Steve Huffman has said he wants it to be easier for casual users to return, and that Reddit should find more ways to show relevant posts even if they are older. The company is also experimenting with video and audio versions of popular posts, some of which come from threads that are several years old.

Reddit has not put these posts into a full-screen, scrollable feed similar to TikTok. In its announcement, the company said it will continue to experiment with ways for people to explore the platform more intentionally, including new navigation options. It also said it is working on ways for users to give feedback on recommended content so the suggestions can be adjusted.
