OpenAI Reportedly Acquires Small Health Records Startup Torch for $100 Million

OpenAI has acquired Torch, a small startup specializing in consolidating personal medical records for AI applications, the companies announced. While the financial terms were not disclosed, a report from The Information, citing an unnamed source, states the deal was valued at approximately $100 million in equity.

The deal is structured as an acqui-hire, bringing Torch’s four-person team and its core technology into OpenAI. The group will fold directly into OpenAI’s newly launched ChatGPT Health service, which is designed to help users analyze and manage personal health information through the chatbot.

According to the companies, Torch had been building an app intended to serve as a central hub for a person’s scattered health data. The technology was designed to pull information from a wide range of sources, including medical records from doctor visits and lab tests, data from wearable devices, and consumer wellness portals, into a single profile.

Torch’s team described its work as creating “a medical memory for AI,” one that unifies fragmented records into a broader context engine. The approach points to technology designed to give AI systems a long-term view of a user’s health, enabling more personalized and informed assistance.

The founding team has a history of working together in the health-tech space. Co-founder Ilya Abyzov stated on X that the team met while working at Forward Health, a venture-backed company known for operating AI-enhanced primary care clinics. Forward Health shut down abruptly in late 2024 after having raised more than $400 million.

Being acquired by OpenAI sends Torch in a completely new direction. Instead of rolling out its own consumer app, the team’s technology will now sit at the heart of ChatGPT Health, showing OpenAI’s push to make the chatbot useful in high-stakes areas like personal health, where having a clear, organized medical history really matters.
