Windows Insiders are getting new options to customize the Start menu and taskbar, as Microsoft expands testing in the Experimental channel. The company said the rollout begins May 15, 2026, and will continue for the next few days afterward.
A change many users have been waiting for is finally here. A new option will allow users to choose between Small and Large sizes, and the setting will stay consistent across multiple displays. The change comes after reports that an update released late last year caused the menu to grow significantly
The Insider build also adds more detailed controls for the Start menu, allowing users to turn sections such as Pinned, Recommended, and All on or off. This makes it possible to simplify the layout based on personal preference, for instance, disabling Recommended and All leaves only pinned apps visible. Microsoft said the feature will roll out to Insiders over the next few weeks. The update will also include a dedicated setting to disable file recommendations in the Start menu only, along with an option to hide a user’s name and profile picture for added privacy.

Microsoft is also expanding taskbar customization, giving Insiders the ability to place it on any side of the screen, including the top, bottom, left, or right. Available icon alignment options will vary depending on placement, with vertical taskbars offering top or centered alignment, while horizontal layouts support left or centered positioning.
Users interested in testing the features will need to join the Windows Insider Program using a Microsoft account. Participants receive early access to preview builds and can submit feedback to Microsoft before updates are released more broadly.
