Google is bringing its Spark assistant to the Gemini app on macOS, giving subscribers a way to automate repetitive desktop tasks without relying on a persistent chat window. The integration lets Gemini Spark interact directly with files and apps across the desktop.
Users can, for example, ask it to sort PDFs in the Downloads folder into organized directories with a single command. Spark also works with Google Workspace, allowing it to generate a budget spreadsheet from invoices stored locally and keep it updated on a recurring schedule. Google says Spark can only access files that users have explicitly authorized.
Google plans to add remote task support in a future update. Once it’s available, users will be able to send multi-step requests to Spark from their phone, such as finding a sales report on their Mac, extracting the total revenue, and emailing the information back while the computer completes the task automatically.
Connected Apps and Custom MCP Support
Google is expanding the range of apps that Spark can work with. The assistant now supports Google Tasks and Google Keep, making it possible to convert notes stored in Keep into tasks automatically. Google is also introducing integrations with Canva, Dropbox, Instacart, OpenTable, and Zillow Rentals. Through these services, users can create flyers, manage files, make restaurant reservations, order groceries, and book apartment tours. The new integrations will roll out over the next week on the web and mobile versions of Gemini Spark, followed by the macOS app in the coming weeks.
In addition, Google is rolling out support for custom Model Context Protocol (MCP), giving users the option to connect their own apps to Spark for a more personalized experience.
Real-time Topic Tracking
Gemini Spark can now monitor topics and respond automatically when something changes. For example, it can deliver highlights and analysis after a soccer match ends or generate a financial report once a stock reaches a user-defined price. Spark can also keep track of blogs, news sites, social media, financial markets, shopping, weather, sports, and email, reducing the need to manually check for updates.
Availability
Gemini Spark for macOS is available in beta to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, starting in the United States. The app can be downloaded at https://gemini.google/mac/.
