Meta is reportedly testing a premium version of its widely used messaging service, WhatsApp, according to details uncovered by feature tracker WABetaInfo. Called WhatsApp Plus, the subscription would introduce cosmetic enhancements and added convenience features while leaving core messaging functions free.
The premium plan, which is still being tested, would include access to special-effect stickers, customizable themes and icons, and expanded chat personalization tools. WABetaInfo, citing a WhatsApp Help Center page, said subscribers could also pin up to 20 chats, assign premium ringtones to selected contacts, and customize chat lists with alerts, sounds, and themes.
While WhatsApp Plus appears to center mainly on cosmetic upgrades, Meta is reportedly considering additional features for the subscription. No official pricing has been confirmed, though test versions of the app have displayed different regional rates. According to WABetaInfo, current pricing ranges from 229 Pakistani Rupees (under $1) to €2.49 (around $3).
Importantly, Meta is not placing WhatsApp’s core features behind a paywall. Messaging, voice calls, and end-to-end encryption will remain free for all users. The launch of WhatsApp Plus follows a similar test of Instagram Plus, which introduced premium options such as Stories lasting longer than 24 hours and the ability to send “super hearts.” Pricing for Instagram Plus has also not been disclosed.
WABetaInfo also reported that Meta may offer one-month trials for WhatsApp Plus to interested users, although no timeline for a wider rollout has been announced.
