Microsoft has begun testing its long-awaited free, ad-supported cloud gaming tier. Xbox Insiders can now stream eligible games they already own across consoles, PCs, and mobile devices without a Game Pass subscription, though each session starts with a short advertisement.
The trial is currently limited to Xbox Insider members. Participants can stream supported games from their own libraries without a paid subscription, although each session is capped at one hour. Microsoft says advertisements appear only before gameplay begins and will not interrupt players once a session is underway.
Microsoft describes the initiative as a limited experiment rather than a permanent feature. The company says it is exploring ad formats that players are willing to accept as a way to make Xbox cloud gaming more accessible. According to Microsoft, the ads will remain unobtrusive, match the quality standards of the platform, clearly identify promotional content, and respect player expectations. The company hasn’t announced an end date for the trial and says future changes will be guided by user feedback.
This new ad-supported option is just one way Microsoft is trying to make Xbox less expensive. Last year’s Game Pass price hike led millions of people to cancel their subscriptions, according to the company. After Asha Sharma took over the Xbox business, Microsoft softened some of those changes and started looking at more affordable alternatives, including free plans with ads.
It’s not just subscriptions that have become more expensive; gaming hardware costs more too. Microsoft and other tech companies have pointed to AI-related memory shortages as one reason prices have climbed for consoles, PCs, phones, and other gadgets. A free cloud gaming service could make things a little easier by letting people play on the devices they already own.
People first heard about Microsoft’s free cloud gaming plans last year, but the early rumors didn’t quite match what we’re seeing now. Back then, leaks suggested players would get only a few hours each month. Instead, the current test gives players unlimited one-hour sessions without any obvious limits on the games they own. That’s a lot like Nvidia’s GeForce NOW free tier, where you can stream your own games in one-hour sessions after watching ads while waiting to get in. Since Google Stadia disappeared, GeForce NOW has been the biggest name in this space.
Users interested in the trial must first install the Xbox Insider Hub on a console or PC and register for the Xbox Insider program. Eligible participants can then stream supported games they own from the cloud without subscribing to Game Pass.
