Google has expanded its Gemini-powered creative tools with Nano Banana 2 Lite, a new AI image generation model designed for speed and lower operating costs. The model can generate an image in roughly four seconds. Google says it’s intended for high-volume use cases, such as creating multiple design variations, producing large numbers of assets, or supporting automated image generation pipelines.
One of the biggest selling points is the price. At just $0.034 per 1,000 images, Nano Banana 2 Lite is inexpensive enough for companies to generate images at scale without worrying as much about cost. Google is clearly targeting jobs where speed and volume matter more than squeezing out the highest possible image quality.
Nano Banana 2 Lite builds on Google’s earlier image generation models. The original Nano Banana launched last summer as part of Gemini 3.1 Flash, followed by Nano Banana 2 in February with improved realism and additional features. While Nano Banana 2 is designed as a versatile model for a wide range of tasks, the Lite version is optimized for speed and scalability.

Nano Banana 2 Lite fits into a broader industry move toward tiered AI model portfolios, giving developers options based on latency, cost, and performance requirements. Within Google’s ecosystem, it complements higher-capability models such as Nano Banana Pro, which is intended for more compute-intensive and demanding use cases.
The release comes as generative media attracts growing attention and debate. AI-generated and AI-assisted images and videos are becoming more common online, leading to concerns about content quality and market saturation. Despite those issues, investment in generative AI remains strong, particularly in advertising, where faster content creation and creative testing offer clear benefits.
Google says its AI is meant to help people create content, not take their place. The company has repeatedly described its models as tools that make content production faster and easier.
Nano Banana 2 Lite is now available through Google AI Studio, the Gemini API, and the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. With its launch, Google has also moved the original Nano Banana into legacy status, signaling the end of active development for the earlier model.
