Grand Theft Auto VI fans who were already unhappy with the game’s digital-only boxed release now have another concern. Rockstar Games has confirmed that the PlayStation 5 download codes included in Japanese retail editions will expire 170 days after the scheduled November 19, 2026 launch.
Despite being marketed as a physical edition, GTA 6 ships without a disc and instead includes a download code inside the box. Following an update to Rockstar’s support pages, players noticed that PS5 codes sold in Japan have an expiration date. Rockstar confirmed that the policy is limited to the Japanese PS5 release and doesn’t apply in other regions. Xbox download codes are not affected and don’t expire. The company has not provided a reason for the difference between the two platforms.
According to Rockstar, download code policies differ depending on the platform and the country where the game is purchased. The company said the expiration date for Japanese PS5 codes is tied to local regulatory requirements. It also encouraged customers to buy from retailers in their own region to help avoid activation issues.
Many fans said the expiration window makes digital purchases feel less like ownership and more like a rental. Others questioned whether Rockstar could eventually introduce the same policy in other regions. Some responded with sarcastic comments about the gaming industry’s growing shift toward digital distribution.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. At release, the game will be available exclusively on those two platforms. The Standard Edition costs $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition is priced at $99.99. Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Pre-orders are open through the Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store.
