Nintendo Confirms Switch 2 Variant With Swappable Batteries for Europe

Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 will use batteries that can be replaced by users. The company said the change is intended to comply with the European Union’s 2023 battery regulation, which will require easy battery replacement for certain products starting on February 18, 2027.

In its announcement, Nintendo said it is “implementing measures to comply” with the new rules and is “preparing versions of products” that meet the requirements. Although the company did not directly mention the Switch 2, it said a “future compliant version” is being developed for products with model numbers beginning with “BEE”, a prefix associated with the Switch 2 console, its accessories, and related software.

The compliant versions will be assigned distinct model numbers and marked with an “OSM” label on their packaging. Nintendo said these units will be treated as separate products for regulatory purposes, indicating that the repairable models are likely intended exclusively for the European market.

The announcement did not include any products bearing the “HAC” prefix associated with the original Switch. This suggests Nintendo is unlikely to develop a replaceable-battery version of the older console, which is expected to be phased out over time. Released in 2025, the Switch 2 introduced a larger display, increased storage, and improved performance.

The company has not provided a launch date or pricing details for the EU-compliant Switch 2 model. The announcement comes only weeks after Nintendo increased the price of the standard Switch 2 in the European Union from €470 to €500, citing higher memory costs and other shifts in market conditions.
